PLIVA's research into anti-inflammatory agents is divided into four programs.
In three of the programs, Locally-acting steroids, Anti-inflammatory agents
and Inhibitors of TNF-alpha secretion, compounds with excellent therapeutic
activity in relevant disease models of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis have
been identified.

In the Locally-acting steroids program, molecules have been discovered
that demonstrate efficacy similar or superior to currently marketed
locally-acting steroids when applied
locally.

In the Anti-inflammatory program, compounds with excellent
anti-inflammatory activity were discovered throughout the testing when applied
orally. A new synthetic pathway, enabling the synthesis of a chemically pure
compound and the initiation of a derivatization strategy, has been found and
is being extensively utilized.

In the Inhibitors of TNF-alpha secretion program, several classes of
compounds have been discovered that inhibit the secretion of TNF-alpha in
vivo and have demonstrated good activity in the animal model of rheumatoid
arthritis. Additional derivatization may provide a development candidate with
higher safety and no adverse events.

Finally, in the Tyrosine phosphorylation program, a collaboration with
Signal Pharmaceuticals has been
initiated.
